HFS/2 - A Hierarchical File System Driver for OS/2

HFS/2 lets OS/2 users seamlessly read and write files on diskettes formatted with the Hierarchical File System, the file system used by Macintosh computers. With HFS/2, Macintosh diskettes can be used just as if they were regular diskettes.

HFS/2 is based on Robert Leslie's hfsutils.

Package overview

HFS/2 consists of several parts:

• An IFS driver that runs in ring 0 (kernel privileged mode), and only passes file system request to the control program.
• The control program, a 32-bit program which runs in ring 3 (user mode), communicates with the IFS and does the actual work.
• The file system utilities DLL, which supports the FORMAT command for HFS diskettes.
• A filter driver that makes it possible to use HFS diskettes by faking a valid boot sector.
• A few utilities for various tasks.

Current status

HFS/2 is in an experimental stage, and still has bugs and problems. It currently works with 1.44MB diskettes and CD-ROMs.

Experimental versions

This area contains experimental versions of various parts of the HFS/2 package. Just like the "official" versions, they may or may not work, and I take no responsibility in any case. You have been warned.

• The latest test version of HFS.EXE (59647 bytes). This version fixes some bugs in version 0.10.
• The last development sources (987746 bytes). This is a snapshot of my development sources at the time that I dropped this project. If you want to continue development, you will find these useful.

Known problems

• Problem: The system freezes when I try to do several things at once with a Macintosh diskette.

  Reason: HFS/2 currently does not support multitasking well. The architecture is being redesigned to fix this.

• Problem: The control program hangs when I issue a "DEL A:*" command.

  Solution: Get the test version of the control program above.

• Problem: When I copy files from an HFS volume to OS/2 and then back, the icons disappear and the Macintosh cannot open the files.

  Reason: HFS/2 does not currently support resource forks, so the resources are lost when a file is copied from an HFS volume.

  Solution: This will be solved in future versions of HFS/2.

• Problem: I cannot switch sessions on my HP CD-ROM writer with Unite CD-ROM Maker software.

  Solution: Kill HFS.EXE when using the software. Also see the HP CD Writers and OS/2 Warp FAQ.
